戰報
Finals: Robert Ackerman (USA) vs. Kazuki Mutsuoka (JPN)

2008/8/10

It all came down to this. One of Japan’s greatest Duelists was paired off against the United States’ Robert Ackerman, and both Duelists were playing Gladiator Beasts. A US competitor has never gotten this far in the Yu-Gi-Oh! TRADING CARD GAME World Championships, and a win here would be a first for the United States. The pressure was on for Mutsuoka too: no Japanese Duelist has made the Finals of the World Championships since Masatoshi Togawa’s Championship victory in 2004.

No matter who won, Dueling history was about to be made! Both Duelists were ready to give it their all. Minutes from now, one would emerge the World Champion.

Game 1

Ackerman opened the Match with a hand of “Neo-Spacian Grand Mole”, “Gladiator Beast Bestiari”, “Elemental Hero Prisma”, “Spirit Reaper”, “Gladiator Beast Darius”, and “Divine Wrath”. He shuffled his hand a moment, then Set “Spirit Reaper” and “Divine Wrath”. Mutsuoka drew for his turn, took a few moments to contemplate his options, and Special Summoned “Cyber Dragon”. He Normal Summoned “Gladiator Beast Bestiari”, attacked with it, and it collided with “Spirit Reaper”. “Cyber Dragon” then attacked “Spirit Reaper”, and Ackerman took a moment to feign thought, permitting the attack moments later. At the end of the Battle Phase Mutsuoka sent “Gladiator Beast Bestiari” back to his Deck to Special Summon “Gladiator Beast Murmillo”. When Murmillo’s effect was Activated Ackerman Chained “Divine Wrath”, discarding “Elemental Hero Prisma” to Negate Murmillo’s Effect and destroy it. Mutsuoka ended his turn by setting a single Spell or Trap Card.

Ackerman drew his own “Gladiator Beast Murmillo” and passed, not making a play. With a hand of all monsters he had few options. Mutsuoka Normal Summoned “Gladiator Beast Laquari”, attacked “Spirit Reaper” with it, and returned Laquari to his Deck to Special Summon “Gladiator Beast Hoplomus” in Defense Position. “End Phase. Your turn.”

Ackerman drew another copy of “Elemental Hero Prisma”, still no real help. He had five cards in his hand with “Spirit Reaper” on the field, to Mutsuoka’s three cards in hand, one set Spell or Trap, “Cyber Dragon” in Attack Position and “Gladiator Beast Hoplomus” in Defense Position. Ackerman needed to make sure his opponent couldn’t Summon “Gladiator Beast Gyzarus” next turn, so he Summoned “Neo-Spacian Grand Mole”.

He sent the Grand Mole to attack “Gladiator Beast Hoplomus”, but Mutsuoka Negated its effect by discarding “Gladiator Proving Ground” for “Divine Wrath”, destroying “Neo-Spacian Grand Mole”. Next turn he Summoned “Elemental Hero Prisma”, sent “Gladiator Beast Bestiari” to the Graveyard with its effect, then sent Prisma and Hoplomus back to his Deck to contact Fuse for “Gladiator Beast Gyzarus”, Special Summoning it. He attacked with both “Cyber Dragon” and “Gladiator Beast Gyzarus”. Ackerman was down to 3500 Life Points, while Mutsuoka hadn’t taken any damage.

“Effect,” announced Mutsuoka, returning “Gladiator Beast Gyzarus” back to his Fusion Deck. He Special Summoned “Gladiator Beast Laquari” and “Gladiator Beast Darius”, and the latter Special Summoned “Gladiator Beast Bestiari” form his Graveyard. Mutsuoka then sent all three back to his Deck to Special Summon “Gladiator Beast Heraklinos”! Ackerman heaved a sigh, and Mutsuoka’s turn was over.

Ackerman drew “Cold Wave”, still not particularly useful. He had “Gladiator Beast Bestiari”, “Gladiator Beast Darius”, “Gladiator Beast Murmillo”, and “Elemental Hero Prisma” in hand. He Set “Cold Wave”, Set a monster, and ended. Mutsuoka Activated “Gladiator Proving Ground” next turn to search his Deck for “Gladiator Beast Bestiari”, Normal Summoned it, and he attacked with “Gladiator Beast Heraklinos” — Ackerman immediately conceded, not revealing his Set cards.

Luck and fate conspire against Robert Ackerman, and Japan’s Kazuki Matsuoka has no trouble sweeping the first duel! He was now just one win away from becoming the Yu-Gi-Oh! TRADING CARD GAME World Champion! Both competitors spent considerable time Side Decking. Everything rested on this next game.

Game 2

Minutes later the second Duel began, and this time Ackerman had a more solid hand: “Torrential Tribute”, “Heavy Storm”, “Giant Trunade”, “Solemn Judgment”, “Bottomless Trap Hole”, and “Gladiator Beast Laquari”. Mutsuoka seemed to be less confident in his hand, looking visibly displeased. Ackerman started things off by Normal Summoning “Gladiator Beast Laquari”. He Set “Bottomless Trap Hole” and “Heavy Storm”, and ended.

Mutsuoka Special Summoned “Cyber Dragon”, and Ackerman Activated “Bottomless Trap Hole”! Mutsuoka spent a few moments contemplating a potential response, but then removed his “Cyber Dragon” from play. Mutsuoka Set two cards to his Spell and Trap Zone: exactly what Ackerman wanted to see!

He Flipped “Heavy Storm” on the turn that followed! Mutsuoka lost his “Bottomless Trap Hole” and “Dust Tornado” to Ackerman’s Spell Card, and was left with just three cards in hand. Ackerman had drawn “Gladiator Proving Ground” this turn, but opted not to press for more damage. Instead, he sent “Gladiator Beast Laquari” to attack directly, and then returned it to his Deck to Special Summon “Gladiator Beast Hoplomus”. He set two more cards to his Spell and Trap Zone to finish out.

Mutsuoka Activated “Reinforcement of the Army”, and he searched his Deck for “Elemental Hero Prisma”. He Summoned it, then Activated its Effect to reveal “Gladiator Beast Gyzarus”, sending “Gladiator Beast Bestiari” from his Deck to his Graveyard. Mutsuoka then Activated “Mind Control”, taking control of “Gladiator Beast Hoplomus”, and sent both monsters back to their owners’ Decks for “Gladiator Beast Gyzarus”! But Ackerman responded with “Solemn Judgment”, Negating the Summon and leaving Mutsuoka with just two cards in hand. Ackerman had two cards in hand as well, and one more card still set in his Spell and Trap Zone. Mutsuoka ended with a bare field.

Ackerman drew another “Solemn Judgment”, and he Activated “Gladiator Proving Ground” to search “Gladiator Beast Darius” from his Deck. Ackerman Summoned Darius, attacked to reduce Mutsuoka to 4500 Life Points, and then returned Darius to his Deck to Special Summon “Gladiator Beast Laquari” with 2100 ATK! He finished his turn by Setting “Solemn Judgment”. “Go.”

Mutsuoka Activated “Brain Control” next turn, and Ackerman Negated it with “Solemn Judgment”. Mutsuoka Activated “Gladiator Proving Ground”, searched for “Gladiator Beast Hoplomus”, then Set it to end his turn. He had one card left in his hand.

Ackerman Activated “Monster Reborn”! He Special Summoned his opponent’s “Gladiator Beast Bestiari”, and sent both Gladiators back to their respective Decks to Special Summon “Gladiator Beast Gyzarus”. Gyzarus’ Effect destroyed Mutsuoka’s face-down “Gladiator Beast Hoplomus”, then attacked for 2400 damage to reduce Mutsuoka to just 300 Life Points. Ackerman still had 2000 Life Points.

He returned “Gladiator Beast Gyzarus” to his Fusion Deck, and used its Effect to Special Summon two copies of “Gladiator Beast Laquari”, both with boosted ATK. “Your turn.” Mutsuoka drew, Set a card to each Zone, and ended.

Ackerman Activated “Giant Trunade”! It resolved, and Ackerman Summoned “Gladiator Beast Murmillo”. He Set his last card to his Spell and Trap Zone, and sent “Gladiator Beast Laquari” to attack Mutsuoka’s face-down monster.

It was “D. D. Warrior Lady”, and she couldn’t stop Ackerman’s next attack! His second “Gladiator Beast Laquari” made a direct attack and the Duel was over.

Robert Ackerman rides the success of a massive “Heavy Storm” play, pressing this Match to one more Duel! Mutsuoka had the advantage, heading into Game 3 going first. Could he capitalize to become the World Champion? Or would Robert Ackerman score the first-ever World Championship title for the United States? Ackerman was quick to make his Side Decking choices, while Mutsuoka spent a bit more time on his decisions.

Game 3

Mutsuoka started the final Duel, Setting a card to each Zone. Ackerman drew: he had two “Elemental Hero Prisma”, “Gladiator Beast Laquari”, “Solemn Judgment”, “Giant Trunade”, and “Reinforcement of the Army”. He Summoned “Gladiator Beast Laquari” and Mutsuoka had no response. Ackerman sent Laquari to attack, but Mutsuoka Flipped “Mirror Force”, destroying Laquari. Ackerman Set “Solemn Judgment”.

Mutsuoka Flip Summoned “Gladiator Beast Bestiari”, attacked with it for 1500 damage, and Special Summoned “Gladiator Beast Laquari” to the field from his Deck. He Set a Spell or Trap and ended. Ackerman drew “Monster Reborn”!

He Activated it, targeting his own “Gladiator Beast Laquari”. It was Special Summoned from his Graveyard, but Mutsuoka responded with “Bottomless Trap Hole”! Ackerman Negated it with “Solemn Judgment”, then Activated “Reinforcement of the Army” to search his Deck for “Elemental Hero Prisma”. He visibly Normal Summoned it, not revealing the other two in his hand, then Activated its Effect to send “Gladiator Beast Bestiari” to the Graveyard. He sent back both of his monsters to his Deck, then Special Summoned “Gladiator Beast Gyzarus”. Gyzarus’ Effect destroyed “Gladiator Beast Laquari”, and Ackerman attacked with Gyzarus. He then sent it back to his Fusion Deck to Special Summon “Gladiator Beast Hoplomus” in defense position and “Gladiator Beast Darius”. Darius’ effect Special Summoned “Gladiator Beast Bestiari”, and Ackerman sent them both back to his Deck to Special Summon “Gladiator Beast Gyzarus” again. He ended his turn without making another play.

Mutsuoka drew to five cards in hand. Ackerman had three cards in hand, as well as his two Gladiator Beasts on the field. Mutsuoka activated “Mind Control”, taking control of “Gladiator Beast Hoplomus”. He then activated “Brain Control”, taking “Gladiator Beast Gyzarus”! One more monster was all he needed to win here and now!

He didn’t have it. He attacked with Gyzarus to lower Ackerman to 850 Life Points, then sent Gyzarus back to Ackerman’s Fusion Deck, Special Summoning “Gladiator Beast Laquari” and “Gladiator Beast Darius”. Darius brought back his other Laquari, and Mutsuoka sent back Darius, the Laquari Special Summoned by Darius, and “Gladiator Beast Hoplomus” to Special Summon “Gladiator Beast Heraklinos”! That might be enough to seal the match. Mutsuoka ended his turn.

Ackerman drew “Mirror Force”. He Set a monster, Set two cards to his back row, and next turn Mutsuoka Activated another copy of “Mind Control” again! That got Ackerman’s face-down monster out of the way, and Mutsuoka was free to attack with “Gladiator Beast Heraklinos” for game!
